Get that Pumpkin Spice Latte
Ahhh, it’s that time of year.
The leaves are changing color, there’s that crisp chill to the air, and the scent of cinnamon, nutmeg and coffee is wafting out of your favorite maritime-themed coffee store.
It’s Pumpkin Spice season!
Despite the fact that we are trying to cut sugar out of our diet, we always have to have one at least once a year. There’s just something so seasonally appropriate and delicious about it.
Maybe it’s the way that the sweet and spicy and rich flavors of coffee and the creaminess of steamed milk all combine together in a beautiful explosion of flavor. Or perhaps it’s the memories of fall and the holidays that are triggered by the winning combination of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove that fill us with memories of warm homes, happy memories, big chunky sweaters and large coffee cups you have to hold with two hands.
Yes, you shouldn’t have one every day.
Yes, coffee can get expensive.
Yes, pumpkin spice lattes are indulgent and terrible for you.
But if it makes you happy, you can at least enjoy one or two.
There may be something in your home or your life that is a metaphorical pumpkin spice latte. Something that isn’t necessarily the prettiest or most functional, but just brings you a lot of pleasure and joy. Maybe even a guilty pleasure.
For me, it is a pair of sweatpants. They’re terribly ugly, are about six years old, they have paint splatters and are starting to get a bit threadbare in places. But oh are they so comfortable! I live in them during the winter months.
The sweatpants don’t really fit my usual criteria (beautiful or functional) but they do definitely bring me a lot of joy through their comfort (both physical and mental). I don’t have a dozen pairs of them, but just the one I can manage. It is my pumpkin spice latte.
You may have an item that doesn’t necessarily fit the rules, that doesn’t necessarily make sense and you know that it isn’t something that you really need or should keep but it makes you so darned happy. Once in a while, it’s okay to hang onto one of these items. I mean, don’t make it a habit to do so (because that’s when things start going south really fast!) but when your home and life are clean and decluttered, you can indulge in a treat every once in a while.
After all, it’s not like the diet police are going to come knocking on your door when you have a pumpkin spice latte. Unless you’re doing Weight-Watchers, in which case I highly advise you not to do that ;)
